Statement from NEA President on the death of Ronald Thorpe

WASHINGTON - July 01, 2015 -

NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia provided the following reaction to the death of Ronald Thorpe, President and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards:

"I am deeply saddened by the news of Ronald Thorpe's passing. Ron dedicated 40 years of his life to the calling of education and ensuring that every child has a caring, qualified and committed teacher. His dedication to students and strengthening the teaching profession culminated in his advocacy for a professional continuum grounded in the standards of accomplished teaching. His work bettered our profession, and our thoughts and prayers are with Ron's family and everyone at the National Board."

In 1987, the NEA helped establish the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards as a vehicle for defining and recognizing accomplished teaching. Garcia and NEA Vice President Becky Pringle both serve on the Board of Directors for the National Board.
