Letter to the House on the Maloney amendment

May 24, 2016

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the three million members of the National Education Association (NEA) and the students they serve, we urge you to Vote Yes on Rep. Maloney’s (D-NY) amendment to the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2017 (H.R. 5055). Votes associated with this issue may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 114th Congress.

This amendment would ensure taxpayer dollars do not go to federal contractors that discriminate against LGBT Americans. NEA has a long-standing commitment to the elimination of discrimination in all facets of society, including in the workplace. We believe that all persons must have equal opportunity for employment, promotion, compensation, and leadership. Further, hiring of federal contractors who discriminate upon gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity is prohibited under Executive Order 11246.

Any discrimination, including employment, sends a terrible message to LGBT students: that they are second-class citizens who are not entitled to legal protection from discrimination or harassment. Our students deserve better. Discrimination also runs counter to our core values of fairness and equality, yet legal discrimination still exists in more than half the states.

Vote yes on Rep. Maloney’s amendment and we urge you to continue the fight for equality in the fundamental American ideal that individuals should be judged in the workplace by their ability to perform their job, not by prejudice and discrimination.
