Professional Development for Paraeducators

Professional development programs should provide all education support professionals (ESPs) with equal opportunities to gain and improve the knowledge and skills important to their positions, job performance, and career growth.

NEA believes that ongoing, targeted, and relevant professional development should be required throughout the career of paraeducators. Paraeducators need professional development in order to be effective in meeting the needs of the whole student and in reinforcing and enhancing the teacher’s effectiveness in the classroom.

Professional development is the process for enhancing one’s personal and professional growth and improving job performance in order to ensure positive educational outcomes. It should be provided through career preparation, orientation, and ongoing, in-service programs.
