The True Pioneer of “Para Power”!

In Memory Of Anna Lou Pickett (1934-2016)

NEA would like to dedicate the Paraeducator Institute website to the late Anna Lou Pickett (founder and past director of the National Resource Center for Paraeducators).

Anna Lou was a true pioneer paving the way for paraeducator careers. She founded the National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals in Education and Related Services (now the National Resource Center for Paraeducators) in 1979 at the City University of New York (now housed at the Utah State University). She was a driving force in the development and usage of standards for paraeducators nationwide and has organized and sponsored the only national conference for paraeducators for over 20 years. Anna Lou served as an advisor to the NEA Paraeducator Institute and was a longtime friend of NEA.
