NEA offers comments on Proposed Regulations for New Federal Education Law


WASHINGTON - August 01, 2016 -

August 1, 2016 – The National Education Association today filed a comment letter in response to proposed U.S. Department of Education regulations that would play a key role in how the new federal education law is implemented across the nation.

President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a major rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, in December 2015. ESSA is a bipartisan law that moves away from the one-size-fits-all approach of No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

“Many of [the Department of Education’s] restrictions are likely to promote the same counterproductive impacts of NCLB: a focus on testing over learning, narrowing of the curriculum for disadvantaged students, disincentives for states to set high standards and goals, over-identification of schools in need of interventions, and the imposition of draconian and ill-advised solutions,” the letter states.

The NEA’s comments are intended to encourage the Department of Education “to listen to educators who are working with parents and community leaders to design and implement better solutions for the public schools our students deserve, regardless of ZIP code.”
