NEA welcomes Congressional update to career and technical education bill

Updated CTE bill will ensure students have the support, tools to learn regardless of ZIP code

WASHINGTON - September 14, 2016 -

The U.S. House of Representatives today voted to reauthorize the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (H.R. 5587), a bipartisan bill that updates career and technical education for schools and students across the country. NEA supports the bill’s passage.

The following statement can be attributed to NEA President Lily Eskelsen García:

“The career and technical education (CTE) bill that the U.S. House of Representatives approved today will help ensure that all students have the opportunity, support and tools to learn regardless of ZIP code.

“Students and schools rely on federal support of CTE because the funds help provide engaging, relevant, and hands-on learning opportunities that lead to higher graduation rates and create paths to a range of post-secondary education and career options. For post-secondary students, CTE provides preparation for careers as well as opportunities to attain degrees and other credentials.

“We are pleased that the bill includes three important elements that warrant the support of the NEA’s more than three million members. The bill involves CTE educators in the decision-making process, prepares educators to address the needs of all students, and moves towards addressing the gaps in workers’ skills and employers’ needs.

“We appreciate the work of the U.S. House Education and the Workforce Committee for producing a bipartisan bill, and we thank the U.S. House of Representatives for approving much-needed updates to CTE.”
