REALITY CHECK: Hateful Rhetoric from Trump-Pence Campaign Impacting Immigrant Children

THE FACTS:

  • Mike Pence voted against the DREAM Act while he was in Congress, effectively telling immigrant students who’ve been in America’s classrooms for years that they didn’t belong here.

  • Pence also expressed support of Arizona S.B. 1070, the broadest and strictest immigration legislation in the country before the United States Supreme Court struck down the law’s most draconian measures in 2012.
  • A recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, titled “The Trump Effect,” shows troubling data regarding the effect in schools of Trump’s hateful, anti-immigrant rhetoric.

    • More than two-third of teachers in the survey reported students – typically immigrants, children of immigrants and Muslims – have spoken about fears of what this election could mean to their lives and their family’s lives.

    • More than a third reported increased anti-Muslim or anti-immigrant sentiment in schools.

  • In an August speech about Trump catering to the dangerous and racist alt-right movement, Hillary said his campaign was built on “prejudice and paranoia.”
