NCHE/NEA Friend of Higher Education Award for a U.S. Senator or Representative

The first award will be given in 2018 at the NCHE meeting held in conjunction with NEA’s Higher Education Conference and National Leadership Summit.

NCHE, working with NEA’s Office of Government Relations, created a biennial NCHE/NEA Friend of Higher Education Award. One awardee per 2-year congressional cycle will be chosen whose leadership, acts, and support have contributed to the improvement of higher education on a national level.

QUALIFICATIONS: The recipient will be a current member of Congress distinguished by efforts to expand students’ access to a high-quality public higher education; who has worked to support faculty and staff in their efforts to provide a high-quality public higher education; and who understands that a high-quality public higher education is the cornerstone of the American Dream.

NOMINATIONS: Any member of NCHE may nominate a U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator by writing a nomination letter and including any supporting materials. The documents should be submitted to NCHE by the nomination deadline.  Each nomination must be signed and seconded by another NCHE member. Non-NCHE members are not eligible as nominators.

The deadline for receiving nominations for the 2018 NCHE Friend of Higher Education Award is January 15, 2018.  Nominations, together with all accompanying materials, should be emailed to nche@nea.org.

SELECTION OF RECIPIENT: The NCHE/NEA Friend of Higher Education Award Committee, composed of selected members of the NCHE Executive Committee, will review each duly submitted nomination for selection of an awardee in consultation with the NEA Office of Government Relations.

PRESENTATION: Presentation of the NCHE/NEA Friend of Higher Education Award will take place during NCHE’s meeting held in conjunction with the NEA Higher Education Conference, currently held each spring.  The NCHE president will present the award.  The 2018 award will be given on March 15, 2018, in Chicago, IL.
