Letter to Representative Conyers supporting his United States National Health Insurance Act (H.R. 676)

March 26, 2007

Dear Representative Conyers:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to express our support for the United States National Health Insurance Act (H.R. 676).

As you know, the number of uninsured Americans has grown significantly in recent years. Of those lacking health care many are near or below the poverty line, with a disproportionate share of lower-income families, African Americans, Latinos, and other racial and ethnic minorities more likely to experience harmful consequences due to a lack of access to health care.

NEA believes that affordable, comprehensive health care, including prescription drug coverage, is the right of every resident. Quality health care is essential for the well-being of our nation's children and families. Children's access to quality health care can impact on their ability to learn and succeed in school.

We support a national health care policy that will mandate universal coverage with the highest quality care at the lowest possible cost. By creating a publicly financed, privately delivered health care system that expands and improves the already existing Medicare program, your legislation will help ensure that all Americans will have guaranteed access to the highest quality and most cost-effective health care services regardless of their employment, income, or health status.

We thank you for your leadership on this issue and look forward to working with you toward its passage.
