Letter to Representative Lowey expressing NEA's support for H.R. 1156, the Investment in Quality School Leadership Act

July 18, 2007

Dear Representative Lowey:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to express our support for H.R. 1156, the Investment in Quality School Leadership Act. We thank you for your leadership in introducing this important legislation to make available professional development money for current and prospective superintendents and principals.

As you know, addressing the shortage of experienced administrators is critical in helping implement rigorous learning standards. Improving student achievement requires quality leadership at all levels. Professional development and ongoing supports are essential to ensuring this quality leadership.

As such, we are pleased that your bill would provide grants to establish professional development programs, allow for ongoing professional development, and encourage recruitment and retention of administrators.

Your bill demonstrates an appreciation for the important role of school principals and superintendents in maximizing academic achievement and facilitating student learning. We thank you again for your leadership on this issue and look forward to continuing to work with you in support of great public schools for every child.

Sincerely,

Diane Shust, Director of Government Relations
