Letter to Senator Obama expressing NEA's support for the Summer Term Education Programs for Upward Performance Act of 2007 (S. 114)
July 18, 2007
Dear Senator Obama:
On behalf of the 3.2 million members of the National Education Association (NEA), we would like to express our support for the Summer Term Education Programs for Upward Performance Act of 2007 (S. 114). We thank you for your leadership in introducing this important legislation, which will provide students with much needed summer education experiences.
NEA members believe that summer learning programs offer invaluable experiences to help augment and supplement school-year learning. The programs supported under your bill would not only allow students to retain the knowledge gained during the school year, but also further their learning in the fundamental areas of literacy and numeracy.
We are pleased that your bill would also promote collaboration between teachers and youth development professionals. In so doing, it will help bridge gaps between schools and youth programs and will encourage teachers to try new techniques and mentor new colleagues.
Your bill demonstrates your continued commitment to provide America's students with the educational opportunities to remain competitive in today's world. We thank you for your continued support of public education and look forward to continuing to work with you to ensure great public schools for every child.
