Letter to the House of Representatives asking for cosponsors on a bipartisan anti-bullying bill

August 16, 2007

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to urge you to add your name as a cosponsor on the Safe Schools Improvement Act (H.R. 3132). This important, bipartisan legislation, introduced by Representative Linda Sanchez (D-CA), would require schools and districts to prohibit bullying and harassment explicitly in their codes of conduct.

As a matter of sound education policy, no student should be subjected to bullying or harassment that interferes with the student's ability to learn. Bullying adversely affects students' ability to participate in or benefit from educational programs and school activities. In addition, bullies are more likely to commit crimes and perpetuate family violence as adults and are at even greater risk of suicide than their targets.

H.R. 3132 will ensure that states, districts, and schools have policies to prevent and respond effectively to bullying and harassment. To cosponsor this bill, please contact Celeste Drake in the office of Representative Sanchez at 5-6676, or Eddy Acevedo in the office of Representative Ros-Lehtinen at 5-3931.

We thank you for your consideration of our views on this important matter.

Sincerely,

Diane Shust, Director of Government Relations

Randall Moody, Manager of Federal Advocacy
