Letter to the House of Representatives urging cosponsorship of Heather Wilson's Teacher Tax Credit Act of 2007

May 11, 2007

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to urge you to add your name as a cosponsor of the Teacher Tax Credit Act of 2007 (H.R. 2287), introduced by Representative Heather Wilson (R-NM).

Ensuring a highly qualified teacher in every classroom is critical to closing achievement gaps and maximizing students' academic success. Yet, often those schools with the greatest needs, and consequently the most challenging working conditions, have the most difficulty retaining talented teachers, particularly given the resources and benefits available in more affluent areas.

The Teacher Tax Credit Act would provide a non-refundable tax credit to educators who work at school-wide Title I eligible schools. In so doing, it would help hard-to-staff schools in rural and inner city areas retain the quality teachers they need to succeed.

To add your name as a cosponsor of H.R. 2287, please contact Robert Cushing in the office of Representative Heather Wilson at 5-6316.  We thank you in advance for your attention to this important issue.
