Letter to to Representatives Miller and McKeon supporting creation of a Classified Employee of the Year award

May 01, 2007

Dear Representatives Miller and McKeon:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to encourage your support for creation of a National Classified School Employee of the Year award. We would recommend that such an award be modeled on the existing Teacher of the Year award and be open to all classified school employees.
Classified school employees -- including paraeducators, library aides, school bus drivers, custodians, food service workers, and other education support professionals -- provide essential services to America's public schools and community colleges. As an integral part of the public education system, classified school employees promote student achievement, ensure student safety, and contribute to the establishment and promotion of a positive instructional environment.

Classified school employees strive for excellence in all areas relative to the education community. Therefore, we believe it is time to recognize their outstanding contributions to our nation's schools and the students they serve by creating a National Classified School Employee of the Year award.

We thank you for your consideration of our views on this issue.
