NEA to join
Washington, D.C. march
The National Education Association will participate in a march Aug. 23 in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's historic March on Washington that culminated with his "I Have a Dream" speech.
NEA's Representative Assembly, the organization's top policy-making body, voted at its Annual Meeting in July to support and take part in the March for Jobs, Peace and Freedom scheduled for Saturday, August 23, in D.C.
NEA is organizing a contingent of members to march in protest of the sanctioned provisions of NCLB/ESEA, privatization of federal Title I resources, the privatization, reconstitution, and closing of schools, and to realize the promise of Brown v. Board of Education.
NEA participants are asked to meet at 9 a.m. at the NEA building. Special arrangements and options for participation in the day's events will be available to NEA members.
NEA members who plan to participate, or have questions, are asked to email NEA at NEAmarchonwashington@nea.org. Or call 202-822-7200.
Martin Luther King III and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference are spearheading the march with support from the NAACP, National Organization for Women (NOW), and United for Equality and Affirmative Action (UEAA).
