Renter's Insurance

Horace Mann Insurance Companies

If you're a renter, chances are your landlord's policy doesn't cover your possessions. Renter's insurance is often inexpensive and can save you money in case of an incident.

Here are 10 reasons why you need renter's insurance.

10. The landlord's lawyers are on you like fleas on Fido.
What happens if a friend trips and falls on your futon or gets globs of blue on your landlord's carpet?  A renter's policy can pay the cost of your defense and any judgment awarded if you are held legally responsible for the injury of another or damage to another's property.

9. You might need a home away from home.
If you're forced to move out temporarily because of damage to your apartment, a renter's policy can help pay for alternate living arrangements.

8. Your fridge might get funky.
When you add an optional Added Perils For Refrigerated Food Products endorsement to your renter's policy, you won't have to worry about the cost of replacing spoiled food if your refrigerator breaks down.

7. Your waterbed may turn into a waterfall.
What happens if your waterbed springs a leak? A renter's policy with a Waterbed Liability endorsement can pay for damage your waterbed causes to your landlord's property.

6. We give you credit where credit is due.
If you become a homeowner, you may be eligible for a credit on your first year of homeowners insurance with Horace Mann's Home Buyer Loyalty Credit. It's another way of saying we like you. We really like you.

5. Laptops don't grow on trees
Want to add special coverage for that laptop computer you're closer to than your Uncle Fred? Add an  Electronic Data Processing Equipment endorsement to your renter's policy for increased limits on your computer.

4. You can get double the discount.
If you own an auto policy with an insurance company, you may receive a discount on your renter's policy.  And in some states, you can get a discount on your auto policy if you own a renter's policy.

3. They don't make lava lamps like they used to.
If your lava lamp gets lifted, you'll need more money to replace it than your parents did when they bought it in the '70s. By adding Replacement Cost on Contents coverage to your renter's policy, you'll be paid enough to replace it at today's price.

2. Your faux fur could be filched.
To protect items you hold especially dear (like that cozy coat or that 10-carat diamond you save for special nights out), add a  scheduled personal property to your renter's policy, and there is no deductible if any of your scheduled property is stolen or damaged.

1. You can't have a party without a stereo.
So what happens if someone swipes your stereo? Even if you don't own a house, you still need protection for your property. A good renter's policy covers belongings such as clothes, furniture and, yes, stereo equipment.
