Grants & Awards

Deadline Approaching for The NEA Foundation’s June Grant Review

nfie_logo.gifApplications are due by June 1, 2006, for both innovation and learning & leadership grants. Recipients will be notified by November 15, 2006. Grants fund activities for 12 months from the award date.

Innovation Grants and Learning & Leadership Grants are available for all subjects, including the arts, literacy, mathematics, science, and technology. Grant amounts are $5,000 for Innovation Grants and either $2,000 (individual) or $5,000 (group) for Learning & Leadership Grants.

Through the years, The NEA Foundation has funded over 1,500 grants nationwide to NEA members. Read about recent projects at the Foundation’s Web site, and submit your own idea!  Practicing K–12 public school teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff are all encouraged to apply. Applying for a grant is easy—why wait?

Visit www.neafoundation.org today for more information, including guidelines and an application. Or call 202-822-7840.

Let’s Talk About the Weather

The National Weather Association offers Sol Hirsch Education Fund grants of $500 each to teachers in grades K–12 to improve the education of their students in meteorology. Selected teachers may use the funds to take an accredited course in atmospheric sciences, attend a relevant workshop or conference, or purchase scientific materials or equipment for the classroom.

Applications are due by August 1 each year and consist of a NWA cover form and a two-page proposal. For more information and application materials, go to www.nwas.org/solhirsch.html,  call 434-296-9966, or send an e-mail to NatWeaAsoc@aol.com .

Making Math Fun, Actually

resources10.jpgBelieving that interaction with real-world mentors can boost student interest and achievement in math, the Actuarial Foundation awards its “Advancing Student Achievement” (ASA) grants to schools and groups with underserved populations in grades 4–12 that are willing to develop mentoring programs bringing together actuaries, educators, and students.

The Foundation can provide a local network of actuaries who are ready to participate, as well as suggestions on how to integrate math concepts from the workplace into the classroom.

Applicants will be given wide latitude in designing programs that enhance learning and create a love of math in each student.

Preference is given to innovative programs that satisfy the unique opportunities and needs present in a local community and do not replicate existing grant programs. Funding is for two years with evaluations conducted yearly.

There is no deadline for application, but you should complete an application at least one or two months prior to the anticipated start date. For more information, go to www.
actuarialfoundation.org/grant/ .
