Union Power
Not exactly a light read for the beach, but Harvard Education Press' New book about teacher unions is still an important one -- especially for any NEA dues-payer who wants to know whether membership is worthwhile. (Yes, it is!) The book, called Collective Bargaining in Education, and edited by two big thinkers in the world of education policy and analysis, Jane Hannaway and Andrew Rotherham, considers the effects of collective bargaining on student achievement, teacher quality, salary, and more. Do existing teacher contracts protect bad teachers? Specifically, do they deprive poor kids of high-quality teachers? We're certain that you will not agree with all the answers offered here, but the discussion is a valuable one.
