Getting Help with the Bills

Anthony Daniels, the NEA Student Program chair, owes more money in student loans than he can expect to earn annually as an Alabama teacher. And he’s not alone. Many new teachers wonder how they can pay for food and rent—plus make good on their loans—on a first-year teaching salary.

UpFront04.jpgThat’s why Daniels and other NEA Student members appeared before the 2007 Congress to ask for cuts in interest rates on federally subsidized student loans. And that’s why they celebrated in January when the House passed The College Student Relief Act, which cut rates in half.

“Like most students, I chose a career in teaching because it is the most rewarding profession in the world….Unfortunately, the joy that comes from teaching doesn’t pay the bills,” Daniels said at a January press conference for the Campaign for College Affordability National Day of Action.
