U.S. Congress Increases Education Funding
The pro-public education Congress educators helped elect last November took an important step in reversing the trend of education funding cuts. It passed a continuing resolution to fund programs for the rest of the fiscal year (through September 30) to the tune of
$1 billion (a 2.7 percent increase). The money goes to much-needed increases for Pell Grants, Title I, special education, and School Improvement programs. Next, Congress will assemble a budget and set specific program funding levels for the next fiscal year. NEA continues to push for more increases to help fulfill every child’s basic right to a great public school.
Support Grows for Social Security Offset Repeal
Legislation to repeal the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision continues garnering support. At press time, the House version of the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82) had jumped to more than 220 bipartisan cosponsors; the Senate version (S. 206) had 15 bipartisan supporters. That’s a direct result of continued pressure from NEA members nationwide fighting for this long overdue repeal. Learn more.
