The Face of Courage

upfront11.jpgALABAMA MEMBER Risks Her Life to Save Students

As a deadly tornado ripped through Enterprise High School in Alabama, teacher Shannon Bridges threw herself over two girls to protect them. Eight students died, and many others were injured, when the high school’s roof and walls collapsed on them as they huddled in a corridor.

Bridges, a 29-year-old botany teacher who was five months pregnant, suffered serious injuries, including a broken collarbone, ribs, liver damage, and collapsed lungs. Doctors later reported her baby was fine, although, as this issue went to press in early April, Bridges had a long recovery ahead.

The Alabama Education Association Foundation—originally created to assist members hit by Hurricane Katrina—is accepting donations for tornado victims. To donate, send checks to the AEA Foundation, P.O. Box 4177, Montgomery, Alabama 36103.
