It’s been 33 years since anyone’s gotten a referendum on the ballot in Utah, but theupfront04.jpg Utah Education Association (UEA) knew voters deserved the chance to give the thumbs-down to a plan widening the private school voucher program. With limited time to gather roughly 91,000 signatures for a petition, UEA, working as part of a coalition known as Utahns for Public Schools, secured more than 124,000 signatures. Voters will get a chance to weigh in on the Parent Choice in Education Act as early as this coming spring. If the law goes into effect, it will give families $500 to $3,000 per student to spend on private school tuition. Something tells us that voters want that money helping public schools—something like 124,000 signatures.
