Supreme Court Delivers Setback to Brown v. Board Progress
The recent decision of the U.S. Supreme Court striking down voluntary public school integration plans in Louisville and Seattle significantly limits the ability of school districts to achieve racially integrated student bodies. “This is a regrettable decision,” said NEA President Reg Weaver, because “separation in education can never be equal. We still have major gaps in student learning and achievement.” He added that “although plans such as those in Louisville and Seattle would not have closed the achievement gaps on their own, they are an essential element of the larger solution.”
The 2007 NEA Representative Assembly reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision by directing NEA to sponsor workshops, seminars, and conferences designed to reaffirm NEA’s long-standing commitment to racially integrated public schools, and to establish as a criterion for the endorsement of any presidential candidate his or her support for the right of school districts to implement voluntary school desegregation plans.
