NEA Statement on Passing of Sandra Feldman,
Former President of the American Federation of Teachers
Below is a statement from Reg Weaver, President of the National Education Association on the passing of former president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Sandy Feldman:
(WASHINGTON) -- “Sandy was unwavering in her advocacy for the rights of children, public education and the members of the AFT. As someone who spent time in the classroom before becoming a national education leader and as a product of public schools herself, she understood just how important the job of being a teacher was to her individual students and the future of our country.
“Despite humble beginnings, Sandy was not afraid to speak up for students and teachers. Her strong voice was heard from the halls of Congress in Washington to the hallways of schools all over the country.
“Her emphasis on early childhood learning is a great example of her vision for the future of public education. She was always looking at where long term gains could be made in improving the lives of all children, especially those from low-income families.
“The NEA family is saddened to lose such an outspoken ally for children and public education. Her work will be long remembered, and she will be greatly missed.”
