White House Shifts Position on Davis Bacon Act
Victory for Working Families
Below is a statement from the President of the National Education Association (NEA), Reg Weaver, about today's decision by the White House to lift its suspension of the Davis Bacon Act for the rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast. The Davis Bacon Act guarantees high quality standards and prevailing wages for workers on government funded projects. The administration suspended the Act in September denying workers in the rebuilding effort union wages and compromising the required work standards.
WASHINGTON -- "Today's decision by the White House is a victory for working families. In addition to guaranteeing good wages, the Davis Bacon Act ensures quality standards in the construction process. By bringing quality workers, with quality wages, and raising the standards for rebuilding, we can look forward to a strong, safe and prosperous future for the communities of the Gulf Coast."
