Nation's Largest Teachers Union Applauds SAT Results
'More Students Than Ever Are Realizing the American Dream'
"We all should be proud of American students and their achievements," is how NEA President Bob Chase described today's announcement by the College Board that the 1.3 million SAT test-takers entering college this fall make up the largest, most diverse freshman class in history.
"Today's news from the College Board shows that more students than ever are realizing the American Dream, regardless of their background," he said.
The College Board also reported that average SAT scores have risen over the last decade while the pool of students has increased, a significant indicator of steady progress. Statistics show that keeping test scores the same while increasing the pool of test-takers is a major accomplishment.
"Sustaining the level of scores in light of the increase in the number of students is a testament to the success of our education system," Chase said. He added that the SAT scores demonstrate that the public's confidence in public schools is well-grounded. A Phi Delta Kappa/Gallup poll last week showed the highest level of public support for public schools in the poll's 33-year history.
"I applaud the work of our nation's educators for their commitment to excellence in the classroom. It's their dedication and hard work that makes a difference in the lives of students every day."
