Read Across Washington

To promote summer reading, the National Education Association is teaming up with Washington, D.C., area public libraries on Monday, June 30. The day will kick off with a special event at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library where NEA President Reg Weaver will join the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2, along with other VIPs, to read Dr. Seuss classics to hundreds of local students.

Readings with local authors and storytellers will take place throughout the day at public libraries across the area.

In honor of NEA's Read Across Washington Day, the Silver Spring Library is holding a read-a-thon with read-alouds in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Montgomery County Executive Isaiah Leggett will kick off the event at 11 a.m., and readings will continue all day. Readers include MCPL Director B. Parker Hamilton, Dr. Elsa Rivera-Sinclair, plus award winning children's authors Susan Stockdale and Laura Kraus Melmed. Open to the public.

Extreme pets and English-language learning will rule the day when children's authors Jane Harrington and Jacqueline Jules read during children's story time at Arlington Central. Harrington, author of four books and a teen novel, will bring along animals to showcase with her book Extreme Pets, by Scholastic. Jacqueline Jules will read from her book, No English, the story of friendship between a young student and her newcomer classmate. Open to the public.
