from PBS 'Between the Lions' show

Here is a list of books that celebrates the joys of reading and writing, and honors authors and that uniquely American institution -- the public library.

  • Abel's Moon by Shirley Hughes. When Abel Grable returns home, he tells his family all about his adventures.
  • Amber on the Mountain by Tony Johnston. Two friends discover the value of reading and writing.
  • Arthur Writes a Story by Marc Brown. Arthur thinks his life is too boring to write about.
  • Author's Day by Daniel Pinkwater. A mix-up occurs when a famous children's book author comes to visit a school.
  • A Bedtime Story by Mem Fox. Polly wants her parents to read her a story, but they are busy with their own reading.
  • Can you Guess Where We're Going? by Elvira Woodruff. Where can you find lots of adventures? A boy tries to guess as his grandfather gives him clues.
  • Check it Out! The Book About Libraries by Gail Gibbons. A simple text gives basic information about libraries and how they work.
  • The Day of Ahmed's Secret by Florence Parry Heide. Ahmed can't wait to tell everyone his secret: he has learned to write his name.
  • Good Books, Good Times! by Lee Bennett Hopkins. A collection of poems about books and writing.
  • Hey, I'm Reading! by Betty Miles. A how-to book that beginning readers can read.
  • The Inside-Outside Book of Libraries by Julie Cummins and Roxie Munro. Come and tour many kinds of libraries.
  • The Library by Sarah Stewart. Elizabeth Brown, who loves to read, creates a library for her town.
  • Library Lil by Suzanne Williams. When the power lines go down, Lil is determined to make everyone into a reader.
  • The Lion's Share by Chris Conover. Leo discovers a new treasure - books.
  • Read for Me, Mama by Vishanu Rahaman. A little boy helps his mother learn to read.
  • Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells. You can read to your bunny anywhere.
  • Red Light, Green Light, Mama and Me by Cari Best. Lizzie spends the day in the city with her mother, a children's librarian.
  • Something from Nothing by Phoebe Gilman. Even when there's nothing left to make out of a scrap of cloth, there's always a story to tell.
  • Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco. A girl remembers a teacher who helped her overcome difficulties and learn to read.
  • Tomas and the Library Lady by Pat Mora. The true story of a librarian who inspired the son of a migrant worker to become an educator.
  • The Wednesday Surprise by Eve Bunting. A little girl and her grandmother learn to read together.
  • Wolf! by Becky Bloom. A wolf decides to learn to read after finding a farm for educated animals.
  • Zora Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree by William Miller. A biography of the famous African American writer.
