February is Black History Month
Black History Month was originally a one-week event begun by Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), noted Black scholar, historian and son of former slaves. It expanded to a month-long celebration in 1976 as part of our nation's Bicentennial.

The African American Read-In Chain
Participate in this nationwide read-in of literature by Black authors on the first Sunday of February at 4:00 p.m. EST. The first Monday is designated for educational institutions to participate. Visit the African American Read-In Chain Web site at for information and materials.
