National Certification Requirements
National Board Certification demonstrates a candidate's teaching skills as measured against high, rigorous standards. National Board Certification is voluntary and complements, but does not replace, state licensing. It is a professional certification increasingly used by states as an option for advanced licensing status.
NEA was among the founding organizations that established the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 1987. Learn more about NEA's role and our position on this important issue.
The certification fee is $2,300. Scholarships, loans and other financial assistance may be available to certification candidates. In fact, NEA Member Benefits offers a low-interest loan to NEA members pursuing National Board certification.
