October 8, 2008—Int'l Walk to School Day
Get Healthy, Relieve Traffic Congestion, Have Fun!
Whether your concern is safer and improved streets, healthier habits, or cleaner air, Walk to School Day is aimed at encouraging a more walkable America.
In 1997, the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago—a day to bring community leaders and children together to create awareness of the need for walkable communities. By 2002, children, parents, teachers, and community leaders in all 50 states joined nearly 3 million walkers around the world to celebrate the second annual International Walk to School Day.
This year, Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 8. Communities can choose to celebrate for a day, a week, once a week, or the entire month as part of International Walk to School Month.
Anyone who is interested in creating a more walkable and bikeable community can participate: teachers, children, parents, grandparents, care-givers, principals, PTA members, community members—anyone!
Register your event online: Registered users have access to a variety of downloadable materials, including templates for printing stickers, certificates, a frequent walker punch card and new puzzles. Registrants also receive a weekly e-newsletter for six weeks in September and October with tips and resources on holding a Walk to School event.
