Teaching About Veterans Day

Learning About Patriotism, Sacrifice, and Service

Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other countries, is usually observed on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistices, which ended World War I on 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. It was first proclaimed a holiday by President Woodrow Wilson the following year, 1919; but, it was expanded to include veterans of all wars in 1954.

Help your students understand the meaning of patriotism, sacrifice and service to our country with these Veterans Day resources.

  1. Veterans Day 2
This tip dovetails with the Veteran's Day letters to the VFW. I have my primary classes write letters and draw pictures. Then I drop them off at the nearest Veteran's Administration hospital.

  2. Veterans Day 3
For the last ten years the sixth grade classes at our school have been writing letters to our state Veterans Home. We always get some veterans who reply to the students.

  3. Veterans Day 1
Here's another suggestion for Veteran's Day or any holiday. Find out where the nearest Veteran's Hospital is and send notes, cards, pictures there to the attention of the Patient Coordinator.
