Teaching About Elections

Resources for Election Day, November 3, 2009

  1. School-Wide Mock Election
I have organized our school's mock election every fall for the last five years, involving about 20 teachers and 400-500 students. We follow the guidelines from the National Mock Election Web site.

  2. Electing Our President
In order to help prepare for our school’s mock election, I read Nancy Gills’ book, Electing Our President, which was very helpful to me.

  3. Newspapers in Education Mock Vote
I recently attended a Newspapers in Education workshop and plan to educate my first grade students in the 2008 presidential campaign and the voting process through newspapers.

  4. Who Could Vote?
In this lesson students will analyze historical developments in voting rights and judge their impact on voter turn-out.

  5. Use Editorial Cartoons to Teach About Elections
Bring the power of editorial cartoons  the strength of their images and the power of their messages into your classroom.
