Look for an iPad storybook app called STOP MATH. It teaches kids about the history and power of math. Einstein and Newton are two of the featured characters in this funny, entertaining book.

I loaded the Smartypants app on my Ipad, and like it lots. It's a real life test of following directions. Gets students to READ the words and respond quickly, but requires accuracy. Nice app to have!

Haha, I love how these are called "Apps" and yet, even just watching the slideshow of them requires FLASH, which means you can't even see it on an iPad! iPads are a HORRIBLE choice for education due to their price, their lack of storage options like USB ports (forcing you to use cloud storage, which most school ISPs simply don't have the bandwidth for), and lack of FLASH which eliminates access to THOUSANDS of FREE online educational resources.

We need to create a balance between technology and personal face to face teaching. Apps can be great for many children...they hold a child's interest and help them focus on a task, all the while teaching them something. They can be used as rewards as well as supplements to lessons...C'mon teachers, get with the times...we can't go backwards. We have to change with the future.

Do Check out Splash Math apps. They are available for grade 1 to grade 5. The apps are fun interactive and aligned to common core state standards.

It is so refreshing to read comments about teaching and the human/ "face" value we give VS apps...I want students to remember how to focus without the screen! i love facejack for my son with autism, i am shocked at Franck Greaux's judgmental pose here... no WONDER we have many teachers that cannot get out of the box and think that it MAY work for some that do not learn in typical ways.. no wonder we have a drop out rate so high in this country... as a teacher and a parent i am willing to try ANYTHING that allows a child to feel productive and successful while learning... smh wow i weep for many students out there that fail because of teachers' ignorance

I am a Middle School Science teacher and have gone to numerous workshops to find " the best of the Best" in technology. I try to utilize many forms in my classsroom however I have found the "App" that holds their attention and gets them buzzing is....ME???!!! wow a real person doing things in front of them. They live in a virtual world so I guess sometimes a real person activly engaging them is ... a novelty!

EDNA is a fantastic graphic organizer! I love how you can change from bubble map to traditional outline by turning the screen. Also, emailing either format directly is a fantastic feature.

The glitz and the ephemera of some technology--the inundation of my students' lives with bits and pieces and no time for quiet reflection or meaningful activities that encourage deep thinking and reflection--- that's the next frontier. I see good students adrift at times on a chaotic sea of too much that purports to be new,better, etc. because its on a screen. The ear buds, the cellphone, the update are just the newest seductions---they are not "bad" but rather they are tools that need to be subjected to the same moral and ethical scrutiny that responsible adults should deploy with anything to which they subject kids. Even my students tell me how seduced they are by all of it and without prompting. Balance and Proportion are worthy goals and worth discussing with students no matter their ages.

Apple-centric apps. Clearly educators seem to think that's all that's out there. Android and Windows Phone marketplaces have apps too, though not as many as Apple. Nook and Kindle tablets have apps too.

The "Teach Me" apps are great for our little ones before and after they recognize numbers and letters. Don't be fooled by the age or grade stated- they are stretchable

Classcards is a great app for cold calling and tracking responses, keeping the rank for each student that period. There are many other uses, like attendance too.

Skitch is awesome. You can upload a photo and write all over it. It also functions like a whiteboard app. I connect it to the LCD projector via adapter and we can work out problems or correct sentences...

I don't have a full time classroom yet, but I tutor several students from 2nd-8th grade. The apps that I use most frequently are: RocketMath, Toontastic (above), writing prompts (you shake it to get different words or scenes etc to start writing), motion math, webster's learners dictionary, and Story Lines for Schools.

My favorite apps to use with my 2nd grade students are Rocket Math, Grammar Jammers, Puppet Pals, and neu.annotate.pdf. The last one allows teachers to send a pdf to the ipod email, and then students can fill out the worksheet and send it back to the teacher to grade.
