California Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) Curriculum is a free, state-sponsored K-12 curriculum that provides 85 units of environment-based instruction aligned with Common Core standards in English Language Arts and Science and History/Social Science Literacy. Units can be filtered by grade, topic, California’s environmental principles & concepts, subject, and CA content standards. The units are well illustrated and large, so resources are presented as PDFs in smaller sections. The website requires free registration.

The Teacher’s Edition (3rd grade) ( PDF, 10 MB, 110 pgs) for the unit “Living Things in Changing Environments” provides teacher background, unit planner, differentiated instruction, traditional and alternative assessments, extensions, resources and five lesson plans. In Lesson 5, Restoring Habitats, students read about habitat restoration and identify methods used to help plants and animals survive in changed habitats.

In addition, the unit supplies a common core correlation guide, teacher’s masters and student workbook (regular and fillable formats), visual aids, word wall and information cards, dictionary, reader, and NGS map.

An 8th grade unit, “Struggles with Water,” examines the role great rivers and other fresh water resources played in the United States in the early 19th century. The Student Edition ( PDF, 1.6 MB, 16pgs) contains the reading for the unit’s five lessons. The Student Workbook ( PDF, 754 KB, 20 pgs) includes vocabulary, questions, and activities to accompany the readings.

A 12th grade unit, “Sustaining Economies and the Earth's Resources,” examines “sustainable economics,” an economic system with a focus on sustaining ecosystem goods and services over time. The unit’s Common Core Correlation Guide ( PDF, 1 MB, 18 pgs) shows where the standards are covered in each of the five lessons.

EEI Curriculum Trainings offers free workshops and online webinars for professional development as well as classroom resources.
