Jigsaw Sentences

Description

Jigsaw Sentences is a strategy that encourages students to form complete sentences by piecing together segments of sentences that are written on pieces of paper.

Purpose

Jigsaw Sentences helps students learn to use semantic and syntactic clues to make sense of words and sentences.

How to Use Jigsaw Sentences

  1. Photocopy sentences and cut them into segments.
  2. Pass out all segments to each student. Be sure that the segments are shuffled.
  3. Instruct students to arrange the segments into sentences that make sense. Challenge students to use all of the segments that they have.
  4. When students are finished, as a class, have them talk about how they decided what segments should go together.

 Here are examples of sentences you can use (with the segments suggested here by slashes):
  • My brother/can draw/good pictures.
  • That chair/is missing/a leg.
  • My cat/is hiding/under/the blue/blanket.
  • Is/your doctor/going to give/you/another pill?
  • I can smell/the dinner/that is/in the/oven.
  • The baby ducks/are/in a line/following/their mother.
  • The toy train/in our basement/ran/off the track.
  • I will/not tell/my secret/to anyone.

  1. Use this strategy several times throughout the school year. Keep a record of how individual students progress by using a chart like the one below. (optional)
