Learn about simple and compound machines while you explore the House and Tool Shed!

Edheads features 15 interactives using science, technology, engineering, and math concepts for students in grades 2-12. The interactives for grades 2-8 deal with technology, for grades 7-12 surgery, medicine, and biology. FAQs lists the site’s activities and suggested grade levels as well as technical information. Each activity’s teacher’s guide has tips, questions for assessment and discussion, a post-activity quiz and answers and lists the applicable Ohio and National standards.

Free website registration permits access to the Edheads Teacher Community, which houses activity forums, teacher resources, and the means to add resources. Teachers have uploaded their own discussion question, activities/labs, assessments, worksheets, projects, and class management suggestions.

Students in grades 2-6 can learn about simple machines and how they are combined to create compound machines in Simple Machines. Everyday items are examined to reveal the underlying simple machines in The House. Compound machines are dissected to reveal their simple machines in the Tool Shed. Students answer questions and earn points. After completing an activity, they can print a certificate of achievement. Four PDF lesson plans accompany Simple Machines.

Students in grades 9-12 can try out their forensics skills in Crash Scene. Students collect evidence, interview witnesses, calculate forces, and draw conclusions. A stand-alone activity, “What If,” explores speed, seatbelts, and alcohol consumption with interactive animations. Additional resources for this activity include real crash scene photos, career descriptions of four professionals who investigate and help victims at crash scenes, and skid test video.
