NewsHour Extra: Poetry
NewsHour Extra: Poetry is a collection of resources for grades 7-12.
NewsHour Poetry Series presents weekly poems and broadcast reports in audio and video format. Text is also included. In a recent post, Billy Collins reads “Cheerios” and reflects on humor and seriousness in poetry. In another, U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Tretheway visits with students at InsideOut, a Detroit-based poetry program.
Poetry Lesson Plans features:
- a lesson in which students in grades 9-12 work together to organize, judge, and participate in a poetry slam,
- and another in which 10th graders compiled poetry anthologies. This activity could easily be adapted for any grade level.
- Teachers are invited to submit lesson plan ideas.
Rules, Tools, Form provides descriptions of familiar poetic forms and devices and examples of both.
Favorite Poem Project
Favorite Poem Project features 50 short videos with individuals as diverse as a retired anthropologist and a 5th grade student explaining the personal significance of a poem and then reading it. The text of each poem is included. For Teachers has K-12 lesson plans, suggestions for using poetry in cross-curricular lessons, and information and applications for the annual Summer Poetry Institute for Educators (July 14-18, 2014).
Find a Poem links to The Poetry Foundation website where poems can be browsed by subject, occasion, holiday, school/period, poet’s region or birthdate, and more.
Poetry Links connects to quality offsite poetry resources.
