Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears is a professional development magazine for elementary teachers. The magazine’s approach in teaching polar science concepts integrates inquiry-based science and literacy instruction. Each of twenty issues has four sections: professional learning, in the field: scientists at work; science and literacy; and across the curriculum. Resources within sections can be printed.

The issue A Sense of Place suggests a way to integrate technology in Using Webcams to Bring the Polar Regions into Your Classroom. The images can then be used as springboard for writing poems. Links to webcams and to lessons are included. Unit Outlines for grades K-2 and 3-5 are aligned to the National Science Education Standards and the IRA/NCTE Standards for the English Language Arts.

In the issue Peoples of the Arctic the section science and literacy includes Lessons and Activities about Arctic Peoples. which includes lessons on Inupiatss, Inuits, and Native Americans. Lessons are aligned to the National Science Education Standards and the IRA/NCTE Standards for the English Language Arts. The section across the curriculum features videos that demonstrate Traditional Inuit Games and ways to include then in the classroom. Many look very difficult and some painful.

Other issues cover weather & climate, rocks & minerals, polar plants, polar explorers, keeping warm, and more.
