East Asian Studies Center houses K-12 lesson plans on China, Japan, Korea and East Asia in art and architecture, culture, economics, education, geography, history, language, literature, mathematics, politics, and religion. All the lessons were developed by Ohio classroom teachers who participated in a National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) seminar. Many lessons list educational standards.

Chinese Zodiac is a five-day lesson that introduces the history of the Chinese Zodiac to 5th grade and ESL students. Lists Ohio English Language Proficiency standards.

In Chinese Knotting, students in grades 9-12 learn how to tie different knots found in China. This lesson can be adapted for students of all ages and abilities.

With Basho’s Poetic Journey, 12th grade English and French students explore Basho, his poetry in translation, and his poetic journey. Links to Basho’s work are provided, though his haiku is easily found on the Internet. Standards are listed.

With Shin’s Tricycle and Truman’s Statement, 9th grade history students explore the bombing of Hiroshima from the point of view of a 4 year old and President Truman’s justification for ordering the dropping of the atomic bomb. Truman follow-up questions are included. The picture book Shin’s Tricycle (1995) by Tatsuharu Kodama and Noriyuki Ando is available in libraries and as a PDF.

After learning about Goryeo (Koryo) period ceramics in Korean Celadon7th and 8th grade art students will be presented with a brief overview of the history of Korean ceramics focusing make a clay vessel using the coil method, decorate it using iron oxide, and glaze it with celadon glaze.

In Asian Country Projects 6th grade social studies students research an Asian country and present their findings to the class. Specific project instructions are provided.
