Get The Math

Found in: math, 6-8, 9-12

Get The Math shows how professionals use mathematics in music, fashion, videogames, restaurants, basketball, and special effects. Interactive challenges for math students in grades 7-10 are provided for each career.

A brief video (1:39) The Setup introduces the professionals who pose the problems.

The Challenges provide three videos for each area. For example, Chef Sue Torres tasks the Get The Math Team to analyze past avocado prices to predict a present price so she can set a menu price for guacamole. Two strategies are suggested, one using a line of best fit and the other box and whisker plots. Students can follow each strategy. In conclusion, Torres offers three more pricing challenges.

The associated Math In the Restaurants Lesson Plan includes an overview, activities, and standards. Teachers can download the complete instructions and handouts. (  PDF, 1.3 MB, 64 pg.)

Teachers resources include a six-minute video of a teacher modeling Get The Math in a classroom, an Overview of the Lessons, links to an archived recording of an hour-long webinar: Reasoning and Sense Making in Context: Algebra Resources that Support Common Core Standards, and lesson plans aligned to Common Core Standards in each career area and handouts that can be adjusted for classes and individuals.
