AASL Lesson Plans

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) maintains an archive of Lesson Plans for grade K-12 educators and students that are aligned with the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and Common Core. All lessons are PDFs:

  • Vegetables is a grade K language arts lesson ( PDF, 25 KB, 3 pgs.) in which students with help research, write, draw, and present a brief report on a vegetable.
  • Creepy, Crawly Insects - Where Can I Find Out More? is a grade 1-2 research skills lesson ( PDF, 7 pgs, 148 KB) in which students visit the library to research insects, take notes, prepare a presentation, and share their findings.
  • Close Reading of Photographs is a grade 2-5 visual literacy lesson ( PDF, 25 KB, 3 pgs.) in which students learn to closely read photographs and take photos that have meaning and share information.
  • What's Your Type? Personalities and Career Choices is a grade 8 careers lesson ( PDF, 249 KB, 9 pgs.) in which counselors and media specialists work with students to set career goals and develop a graduation plan.
  • Mental Health issues in YA Literature is a grade 10 health lesson ( PDF, 112 KB, 6 pgs.) in which students research and write about mental health issues and how they are depicted in YA literature.
  • The archive also houses a lesson plan template, rubric, and checklist.
