United Nations Day

United Nations Day October 24th has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948 and marks the anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter in 1945 (See: United Nations Is Born). Reacquaint students with the UN and its mission with these lessons and resources.

Lessons:

  • Helping Hands students learn about the United Nations Security Council and the problems it attempts to tackle, focusing on major issues in several developing nations.
  • The United Nations Students in grades 9-12 learn about efforts to resolve differences between nations after World War II. Includes handouts and provides standards.
  • A World Not Ours Students in grades 9-12 interpret the text of UN Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after watching a video from the perspective of a displaced family. The POV video can be watched online for free until October 13, 2015.
  • Human Rights in Popular Culture Project ( PDF, 125 KB, 5 pgs) Using C. Wright Mills’ concept of “Sociological Imagination” and the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights List of Issues, students in grades 11-12 choose a popular culture product and analyze it in a global social context.
