Found in: arts; preK-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12

A product of Kentucky Educational Television, Arts Tool Kit offers lesson plans and other resources (idea cards, glossaries, video clips, and special features) in dance, drama, visual arts, and music for K-12. Lessons suggest cross-curricular applications, and the Multi-Arts Tools lists opportunities for teachers and students. Lessons are aligned to Kentucky State Standards but can be adapted to other state standards. All lessons include assessment rubrics, and many have handouts. Resources in toolkits are free on the website. (Virtual field trips and some videos are only available on boxed toolkits.) Individual boxed Toolkits are also available for purchase. A no cost and one time registration is required. Note: some navigation is awkward.

Under Dance is a K-3 lesson The Story of Wheat (four 30-minute sessions) in which students explore the significance of wheat, experiment with the shape of the circle in dance, and consider dance as a form of storytelling.

Under Drama, is a grade 4-8 lesson Comparing Technical Elements in which students compare two dramatic excerpts and plan a production of a folktale, legend, or fable. Links to three video excerpts, two from a stage version of The Wind in the Willows and a storytelling of “The Buzzard and the Monkey,” are provided.

Under Music, is a grade 7 lesson Medieval Plainchant in which students learn about the characteristics of plainchant and the contributions of medieval composer Hildegard of Bingen. Musical excerpts require RealPlayer.

Under Visual, is a grade 9-12 lesson Abstract Papier-Mâché Sculpture in which students examine one of Henry Moore’s works and create an abstract sculpture in his style. This lesson can take up to ten one-hour class sessions.

Student Center provides This Day in the Arts, an arts calendar; profiles of Kentuckians in the arts; online art galleries; and interviews with and information about Kentucky writers.
