K-12 Teacher Portal

found in: science; preK-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12

The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) K-12 Teacher Portal is a collection of resources to enhance physics education.

Under the icon Lessons & Resources is a library of materials for use in the classroom and planning. Lessons offer multimedia Digi Kits, or units of instruction with background resources. Two additional Digi Kits are in development. Digi Kits cover balloon to rocket science, as well as biological sciences. For example, DNA Science incorporates physics, chemistry, and biology in a diffraction lab for students to model the work of Rosalind Franklin whose work led to the discovery of the structure of DNA in the 1950's. In the lab, students model Franklin’s technique to determine the pitch angle of DNA using a pen spring and a laser. The kit furnishes a lesson/assessment with teacher and student guides, models/simulation, video/animation, historical context, societal impact, background, and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The Physics Front has teaching resources: modules, lesson plans, and tech tools for K-12 physics and physical science classes. Requires free registration. PhysPort helps physics teachers find resources based on physics education research. Search under teaching, assessment, and troubleshooting. Discussion Lists link to AAPT email lists. See AAPT Guide to Email List Participation before participating. Webinars are available for AAPT members.

Student Programs spotlights activities and programs for high school physics students: awards, challenges, contests, and more. The High School Physics Photo Contest, for example, is open to students in grades 9-12. Entries in three categories are accepted every year from March 1 to May 15.

Professional Development lists and links to special events and initiatives, national conferences, and other resources to share work and build leadership.
