Developed to help combat Tennessee’s rising incidence of Type 2 diabetes, GetFitTN: Lesson Ideas incorporate physical activity into all subject areas.

  • Math has 13 activities. In Imagination Station, students are given a number and simulate rope jumping as they count by 2s, 3s, etc. In Math in Action, students perform movements when a mathematical operation is indicated: addition – jump, subtraction – squat, multiplication – jumping jacks, division - arm circles.
  • Science has 9 activities. In Cell Tag, two students are taggers.  When a student is tagged, she must identify a major part of a plant or animal cell.  If correct, she may return to the game.  If the student fails to identify the part, he must do 20 jumping jacks and then try to identify another card.
  • Language Arts  has 8 activities. In As If, students act out sentences read aloud by the teacher. Physical activity continues for 30 seconds. Sample sentences: Jump in place as if you are popping popcorn and Shake your body as if you are a wet dog.
  • Social Studies  has 5 activities. The activities are specific to Tennessee history, though they could be easily modified for other states. Areas covered are Native Americans, African Americans, Atomic science, and folk music.
  • Art has 10 activities. In Model My Movement, students create clay figurines in a pose from their favorite physical activity or sport and place them around the room. Students move to each figure and imitate it.
  • Video Resources  teach and encourage healthy behaviors and are grouped under three headings: fuel, move, and recharge.
  • Teachers Forum  participation requires registration.
