found in: science; math; 3-5; 6-8

InVenture’s Lesson Plans were created to help teachers mentor students through the development of an invention. The lessons work best in the context of a design challenge.

Grades 4-8 General Education Lesson Plans ( MS-Word, 598 KB, 59 pgs.) The ten lessons in this 12 week unit demonstrate the importance of engineering and introduce grade 4-8 general science students to the engineering design process. A key concept is that the process is iterative, not linear, that students may need to repeat steps as they encounter problems. In Prototype, teams of students make a formal sketch and prototype. Teams bring in items from home to build their prototypes. Testing will help them improve the prototype.

In addition, teachers will find lessons and resources for Gifted 5th Grade.

High School Lesson Plans ( PDF, 6.2 MB, 65 pgs.) The seven lessons in this unit are aligned with Georgia standards in Science, Math, STEM, and Language arts. Rubrics are included. Lesson 1: Intro to Design and Discovering Your Design Challenge introduces the engineering design process: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test, repeat and asks teams of 3-5 students to design and build new or improved structures, machines, or processes. The lesson suggests content area connections, links to other resources, and provides a design challenge worksheet.
