Most students are handy when it comes to using computers, but do they understand how they work and how technology shapes society? Intel’s The Journey Inside  features six sections with 35 interactive lessons and video on technology, computers, and society for middle school teachers and students. An Overview suggests how teachers can best use the resources. As can be expected, laptops and smart phones have already supplanted the bulky desktop computers pictured in the videos.

Explore the Curriculum has six sections: explore the computer, circuits and switches, digital information, microprocessors, Internet, and technology & society. Each section opens with a video. Technology and Society opens with a video (10:00) that looks at how past technology: cars and telephones changed the way people lived, and then looks at how the microprocessor has affected diary farming. Five lessons include readings, questions to think about, research ideas, and links to explore.

Instructional Strategies are specific for the six curriculum sections. For example, Instructions to Computers provides a unit summary, goals and objectives, preparation, procedures, handouts, whiteboard images, and more.

Educational Resources are teaching tools for student centered learning. Resources include three free downloadable professional development courses and an elearning and workshops for teachers. A showcase has a collection of unit and lesson plans for K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 to integrate technology into classroom projects. Teachers will also find featured resources and guidebooks for “modern learning experiences.”
