Beetles (Better Environmental Education, Teaching, Learning & Expertise Sharing): For Field Instructors  These K-12 activities provide activity overviews, instructions, teaching tips, science background, videos, and suggestions for accommodating different students. Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Choose student activities under eight headings or from an alphabetical list.

Whacky Adapty In a version of tag that represents how structures and behaviors help organisms survive in their habitats, students learn each other’s names. The Instructor Guide  ( PDF, 2.8 MB, 11 pgs.) includes s field card.

Bark Beetle Exploration  Students identify bark beetle galleries, explain patterns of galleries, and interpret what these tracks reveal of the beetle life history. The Instructor Guide  ( PDF, 5.7 MB, 21 pgs.) features full-color images of a bark beetle and bark beetle damage, a field guide to bark beetle galleries, and teacher field information cards to print. A Video (8:21) demonstrates how an instructor leads this student-focused activity.

Spider Investigation  This is a follow-up to the Spider Exploration activity. Students collect data and compare quantity of spider webs in different plant communities. The Instructor Guide  ( PDF, 3 MB, 14 pgs.) includes field cards.

Night Hike Scavenger Hike  Students look for and discuss a variety of items found during a night hike. The Instructor Guide  (9.9 MB, 39 pp) includes Night Objects information charts, student cards, and instructor field cards.
