On October 16, 1859, the abolitionist John Brown and 22 followers captured the U.S. Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Two days later, U.S. Marines under the command of Colonel Robert E. Lee retook the armory and captured Brown and some of his surviving followers. Brown stood trial on October 26th and was hanged on December 2.
